Dress Code

View the Student & Family Handbook

Students may express themselves by the manner of their dress and appearance; however, students shall not wear clothing or affect an appearance at school or school-sanctioned activities or events that is or may be disruptive to the educational environment. Students will not be permitted to wear black trench coats or dusters at any district school, on district provided transportation, on school grounds, or at any school-sponsored activities.

During cold weather, proper outer clothing and boots should be worn. Students will go outside for recess every day, except in severe weather. The guideline is that they will not go out if the temperature is below 20 degrees or if there is significant precipitation. The teachers or paras might also allow the students to take a short break outside.

Inappropriate dress includes but is not limited to:

  • Head covering for both boys and girls such as hats, caps, bandanas, etc. inside the building
  • Belly buttons and tummies showing (tops must be long enough to be tucked in)
  • Inappropriate neckline
  • Tops with spaghetti straps (straps must be at least two inches wide)
  • Muscle, mesh shirts or cut-off shirts
  • Shorts, skorts and skirts (must, at minimum, reach the bottom of all fingertips when arms are extended at the side)
  • Chains or spikes (these are a safety hazard)
  • Low or sagging hip huggers, pants, or shorts – if pants are sagging, the student will be sent to the office to receive a belt
  • Any undergarments that are showing
  • Inappropriate language, messages, or “lewd” graphics on clothing (including alcohol or tobacco advertising)
  • Students must wear athletic shoes in Physical Education classes for their safety.

Dress Code Guidance in Jeffco

Responsibility for student dress and appearance generally rests with individual students and their families. Students may wish to express themselves by the manner of their dress and appearance; however, students shall not wear clothing or affect an appearance at school or school-sanctioned activities or events that is disruptive to the educational environment. Jeffco Public Schools standards on student attire are intended to help students focus on schoolwork, reduce discipline problems, and improve school order and safety.

Disciplinary action for violating the student dress code shall include notifying the student of the violation and requiring that the dress or appearance be corrected before the student reenters the classroom, school environment, or school-sanctioned activity or event. At the discretion of the building-level administrator, a family conference may be held. More serious consequences may result from repeated or serious violations.
